Milford mayor's youth award winners

Mayor Benjamin G. Blake and Milford Youth and Family Services presented The 24th Annual Mayor’s Youth Award on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Milford’s Parsons Complex Auditorium.

There were 267 youth nominated and over 600 youth and their families attended the ceremony. Individual awards were presented in three age-based categories: Elementary, Middle and High school. An additional award also recognized the efforts of local youth groups.

The awards were given to youth who demonstrated an outstanding commitment to improving the Milford Community. Teachers, parents, clergy, friends, and group leaders nominated finalists for the awards.

The 24thAnnual Mayor’s Youth Award Recipients are as follows: Elementary School: Julie Myers Julie has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Milford for four years. During that time, the staff has come to affectionately refer to her as an ambassador for the Club. Julie has recruited friends to join the Club and volunteered approximately 100 hours of her time there. Julie is dedicated to improving the lives of other Club members and spearheaded marketing campaigns as well as helped form the decorating committee at the Club. Julie has also been a member of Girl’s Club, Scrapbooking, Healthy Eating, Fitness, SMARTMoves, Girl Scouts, Model Club, and Renegade – the Boys & Girls Club’s Newsletter.

Middle School: Olivia Egershiem As president of the Boys & Girls Club of Milford’s leadership program, Torch Club, Olivia has shown abilities well beyond her years. She has been able to obtain donations from local businesses on her own in support of the Club. Olivia donates an average of five hours per day working in the variety store at the Club or helping younger Club members with their homework.

High School: Shaina Arsenault Shaina is an honors student at Joseph A. Foran High School and is a role model to her peers. She displays a friendly outgoing personality, lots of enthusiasm and energy as well as a great sense of humor. In addition to her academic excellence, Shaina is involved in several extracurricular activities. She participates in voice and piano instruction and is a soloist with the New England Ballet Company. Shaina is also a mentor for the Milford Merry Musical Theater Adaptive Program – a dance a theater program for special needs children.

Group Category: Bully Elimination Alliance of Students & Teachers (BEAST) BEAST has collaborated with the Gay/Straight Alliance and Natural Helpers in their attempts to end all types of bullying at Joseph A. Foran High School. They attended a two day training held by the Anti-Defamation League on how to move from being bystanders of bullying to becoming allies of bullying victims. BEAST then held an assembly, attended by all 9th and 10th graders, on bullying that succeeded in positively changing the school climate on bullying. BEAST plans to sponsor another assembly in the fall for incoming freshmen. And using a grant from the Chamber of Commerce, BEAST members will travel to East Shore Middle School to impress the importance of kindness and compassion on the 8th graders.
