Former Milford Hospital official remembered
MILFORD — Dr. Allan A. Brandt, 89, a retired physician who later taught computer graphics, died May 1, 2012.
Brandt was in private practice and then became director of emergency medical services at Milford Hospital.
He was instrumental in establishing the city’s Emergency Medical Services Council and helped establish an Emergency Department at Milford Hospital. He was named Milford Citizen of the Year in 1975.
After retiring from medicine, he earned a degree in studio arts at Southern Connecticut State University, where he taught computer graphics.
Brandt was a Long Island, N.Y., native and alumni of Amherst College and Yale School of Medicine.
He was president of Milford Hospital’s medical staff and established the annual training exercise for first responders. He was president of the Connecticut Emergency Physicians Association, served on the Governor’s EMS Council, led the task force to set state EMS standards and created basic life support courses for local high school students.
He also served on the American College of Emergency Physicians and American Heart Association Advanced Life Support Committee. He was president of the Caswell Cove Condominium Association, where he served a stint as webmaster and newsletter editor.
Brandt is survived by his wife of 25 years, Barbara Collins; her son, Kevin Collins, and his wife, Cathleen; his first wife, Joy Brandt Viertel and their children, Eric Brandt and his wife, Mary Sullivan, of Brookline, Mass., Karen Brandt and her husband, David Pomeroy, of Arlington, Va., and Lauren Brandt and her husband, Jean-Louis Sarbib, of Washington, D.C.; and grandchildren Frances and Molly Brandt, Chloe and Leah Sarbib, Kevin and Ryan Collins, and Erin and Robin Pomeroy.
A multi-stem Shadblow serviceberry tree was planted on the Green for Brandt and his wife, who chose the site.
