Wine tasting to benefit Milford Literacy Center

The 18th Annual Literacy Center of Milford Auction and International Wine Tasting will be held on Friday, October 12, 2012, 7:00-10:00 pm at Westwoods Ballroom, West Haven, CT.  Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the Literacy Center at 203-878-4800 or www.literacycenterofmilford.com.  Our fine area restaurants will provide an opportunity to sample their specialties while Scott Griffin’s, “On The Rocks Spirit Shop” will offer samplings of a variety of wine, beer and cordials.  Hors D’oeuvres, desserts and chocolate creations from area restaurants and caterers will also be served.  There will be raffle baskets and a live auction.  Auction items include hand made gifts, gift certificates to local restaurants, theater tickets, floral arrangements, sports tickets, art, jewelry and much more. 


We will be featuring dancers from The New England Ballet and Chef Neil Fuentes.  Neil Fuentes’ love for food began early, helping his mother in their Venezuelan kitchen.  In 1995, he moved to the U.S. and his vibrant personality, Latin flair, and love for entertaining catapulted Neil into a high volume catering business for a leading Connecticut restaurant group.  His numerous appearances on WTNH Channel 8, Ct Style as the Sensational Singing Chef fuses together Neil’s singing and dancing talents with his artistic culinary side.

Proceeds from this event support the Literacy Center’s programs throughout the year.  The Center tutors adults in ESL, GED preparation, reading and writing as well as the offers family literacy programs in our community.

After the June 11 arrest of Luis A. Rodriguez for the 2001 murder of Walnut Beach resident Kelsey Monahon, I got curious about other long-term unsolved homicides in Milford. So, I began digging through the New Haven Register's archives; I looked at all the murders in Milford that we have on record (dating back to the 1940s) and I came up with a list of 9* unfortunate souls whose murders are unsolved. UPDATE: Stew Leonard Jr. addresses Milford theater site

Updated poll results. A total of 456 people took the New Haven Register's poll question concerning what they'd like to see happen to the former Milford Showcase Cinemas site on Cherry Street. A staggering 384 respondents wants a Stew Leonard's dairy store or 84 percent, followed by 35 or 8 percent for open space, then mixed use with 24 responses, followed by a stripmall with 8, and a supermarket with just 5 responses. Milford theater site sold; what do you think should go there?

Milford reporter Rich Scinto needs your help for a story he is working on today. At an Economic Development Commission meeting this morning it was revealed that the former Milford Showcase Cinemas site sold for more than $5 million. But the $5 million question concerns what will be going there. As Milford residents what do you think should occupy the former theater site on Cherry Street?
