Milford's Fourth of July celebration

MILFORD—The Milford Volunteer Fire Department and Troop 721 of the Boy Scouts of America in Milford in conjunction with the City of Milford and with the support of the Milford Girl Scouts will conduct the 2012 “Let Freedom Ring” National Bell ringing Ceremony to celebrate the birth of our country as a free and independent nation.

The event will take place on the Milford Green on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the site of the retired alarm bell of the Milford Volunteer Fire Department.

The alarm bell will be rung thirteen times promptly at 2:00 p.m. EDST honoring the representatives of the thirteen original colonies who signed the Declaration of Independence. The ringing also pays tribute to the brave patriots who fought in and supported the American Revolution as well as all who sacrificed to maintain our freedom throughout the years.

On June 26, 1963 Congress passed Concurrent Resolution Number 25 that decreed ringing bells on Independence Day was both ‘fitting’ and ‘appropriate’.

Residents are encouraged to sing out and celebrate on this day and bring a bell for the 2:00 o’clock ringing.

Information was submitted via a press release from the mayor's office.
