Milford Brush Fire:Updated

Meanwhile in Milford a brush fire that began near Schoolhouse Road and Bridgeport Avenue Monday evening ended up destroying 50-acres of land and sections of the the Beaverbrook recreation boardwalk, officials said Tuesday.

Fire Capt. Chris Zak said Tuesday about 50 acres were destroyed and the brush fire which began 6 p.m. Monday was not fully extinguished until 2:30 Tuesday. Zak and Mayor Ben Blake said the boardwalk near the Beaverbrook recreational trails was destroyed in numerous areas.

Firefighters from several communities battled the brush fire near Schoolhouse Road and Bridgeport Avenue Monday evening that halted rail traffic, closed exit ramps on Interstate 95 and produced smoke that could be seen for miles.

The Beaverbrook Trails located along West Avenue and Schoolhouse Road has a wooden boardwalk over some of the rougher terrain. Blake said it’s too soon to say if the area is passable or what might happen to the damaged boardwalk.

Blake praised firefighters for ensuring no one was injured, and that no buildings were destroyed.

“The Milford Fire Department did a fantastic job and they monitored the area to make sure there were no recurrences,” Blake said.
