Free Wi Fi in downtown Milford

MILFORD--Visitors and patrons of Milford's Downtown area will soon be able to access the internet for free within the eastern half of New England’s second longest city green. Mayor Benjamin G. Blake will announce the deployment plan at a public launching ceremony (Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 4:00 p.m.) beside the Memorial Flag Pole on the City Green.

“Since Milford’s founding, the Downtown Green has been the place where our community comes together. By keeping pace with the advances in technology and transforming our Downtown into a high-tech place to meet, we will maintain our great history and tradition as the Milford Green will continue to be the hub of activity for our City,” Blake said.

Blake and the City partnered with the Milford Technology Advisory Council (MTAC), a volunteer organization comprised of local technology professionals and hobbyists, as well as several sponsoring merchants, to enhance the Downtown experience for the growing number of visitors with Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones, tablets and laptops. This is the first deployment in an ongoing effort to expand free Wi-Fi coverage throughout the Downtown area.

When launched, the wireless network will appear as “Milford Downtown Wifi” and visitors will be directed to a browser landing page to acknowledge the Acceptable Use Policy. For its network, MTAC employed products from Meraki, an innovator in wireless technologies, which will make expansion of the network downtown simpler and at a much lower cost to sponsors.

"Merchants and visitors to downtown will now be able to combine the uniqueness of the shops in the area with the technological advances the web brings consumers," Blake added. "Downtown Milford is now even more of a 'hot spot.'"

The following information was submitted via a press release from the mayor's office.
