The holidays are a special time of the year but they are also a time when people are especially vulnerable to burglary, theft and other crimes. The Crime Prevention Unit is offering a few tips in order to reduce the chances of you or your family becoming victims of crime. Protect Yourself:  Have your car keys in hand so you don’t have to linger before entering your car. Check the back seat and under the car before getting in.  Always lock the car doors after entering or leaving your car.  Try to plan your shopping trip with other people. Don’t shop alone.  Walk and park only in well-lighted areas. Always be aware of your surroundings; pay attention to any unusual or suspicious activity or persons and report them.  Never leave your purchases in plain view in your car. Don't know if you will have to raise your house after damage from Sandy or what permits you will need? The city is hosting two workshops to help residents understand the permitting process. The two workshops are being held on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Tuesday Nov. 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Residents impacted by the storm are also encouraged to contact the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as they may be eligible to received low interest loans to recover from physical damage and economic injury to their homes and/or businesses as a result of Storm Sandy. The Planning and Zoning Board will likely vote on the proposed hookah lounge  on Bridgeport Avenue at its meeting next week. The proposal needs seven out of 10 votes for approval because it's a special exception for the zone area. The board voted down the proposal last time it came to them. Link to photograph The Saint Gabriel's Rectory made it to national news after a photo of it being pounded by waves during Hurricane Sandy was featured in a Time Magazine photo slideshow. Professional photographer Stephen Wilkes took the photo around twilight on Oct. 29. "Seeing the power it [Sandy] had at low-tide was amazing," he said. Wilkes was one of five photographers that documented the day of the storm for Time Magazine. This isn't Wilkes' first time documenting a natural disaster; he has also covered Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. "I'm drawn to events that really speak on a lot of different levels," he said. "I think this is a warning...a tectonic shift."
